Many times, on the way to a trip in the North of Israel, we pass by this special site, featuring a statue of a rider on his horse. But few are the people who actually stop here and investigate this site thoroughly. Here, near the Beit She'arim National Park, in an area of less than ten dunams, is the Commemoration Site in memory of "The Watchman", Alexander Zaid (1886-1938). Zaid, one of the founders of the Jewish defense organizations, Bar Giora and HaShomer, lived in this area, in which he was also murdered. The statue in his memory was erected in 1941 by the sculptor, David Polus, but it fell apart with the years due to erosion. It was built anew from bronze in the 1970s by the sculptor, Dan Zaretsky. Near the statue there is the structure of the shrine of Sheikh Abreik with its two stone domes, a visit to which is attributed with healing powers by the Muslims. From each spot on the top of the hill one can see the open views of the Jezreel Valley and the eastern slopes of the Mount Carmel range. Access from road number 722.
