In addition to well-kept lawns, charming shaded corners and a beautiful beach, Ashkelon National Park offers a journey in time into the past of one of the most ancient cities in the world. In the archeological digs which took place here an ancient gate was discovered, which is considered to be the earliest arched structure ever to be found. At the center of the park one can find more impressive archeological remains as well as a statue garden, a Roman basilica, a courtyard surrounded by columns featuring the marble statues which decorated the entrance to this site and architectural remnants and statues which were discovered around Ashkelon. The park also contains a fascinating system of about 60 wells of different types, and on the park’s east side are the remains of the Church of Santa Maria Viridis from the 5th century CA, which was originally built as a basilica. This place also provides a magnificent and romantic panoramic view of the sea.
