To the north of Atlit there is a detainee camp that the British built in an old military base during their rule here for the Jewish illegal immigrants who tried to escape Nazi persecution in Europe. The detainee camp in Atlit is a declared National Heritage Site which tells this story from the time before the foundation of the state of Israel. At the camp one can visit the original and reconstructed shacks in which the British put the immigrants before deporting them to Cyprus, hear the story of the break into the camp in order to free detainees and watch the audio-visual show telling the story of the camp. Also, the structure where the immigrants were sprayed with DDT, and some of the shacks were reconstructed. There is a ship here as well from the same model which served the immigrants. In addition to the museum, about three kilometers north-west of the town of Atlit there is a Crusaders’ citadel, built on an ancient mound, which is one of the most beautiful and impressive Crusaders’ citadels in the country.
