The "green lung" of the central area of Israel is the vast Ben Shemen Forest. This is an old and familiar forest, which always delivers on its promises- whether you are interested in a bicycle trail, a relaxed barbecue, a hike or simply a pleasant leisurely walk. The forest spreads over more than 21,000 dunams, which actually makes it a great cluster of forests. It got its name from an oil production factory which was active in the area in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there are mainly pine trees here and lately some native Israeli representatives have been introduced and some orchard trees as well. This forest offers lovely and well-indicated scenic trails, park facilities, many observation points, archeological sites, tall mounds and more. There are a number of entrances to the forest which is situated east to the city of Lod, and each entrance offers a helpful orientation map.
