Mishkenot Sha’ananim, which was built for the poorer people of Jerusalem, was established in 1860 and was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. It was built by Sir Moses Montefiore to answer the needs of the residents of the Old City. In addition to the residential structures there were also two synagogues, a bath house, a big water reservoir, a Jewish ritual bath (Mikveh) and an oven for baking. To the west of the neighborhood there is still the gristmill, which was also a part of the same project, the purpose of which was to provide means of income to the residents of the new neighborhood. Today, inside the structure of the gristmill, there is a small museum which tells about the activities of Sir Moses Montefiore, and next to it behind glass is his restored carriage.
