The Circassian Museum in the village of Rehaniya which is in the Galilee region, designed to preserve and promote Circassian heritage, will introduce you to those who live here but are rarely heard: the Circassians- who are spread around the world and of whom a minority reached Israel at the end of the 19th century. Apparently, whoever already heard about the Circassians, heard about the practice of Bride Kidnapping (which by the way is not practiced anymore). Thus it is refreshing to come here and learn first hand about these fascinating people, whose roots are in the Caucasus region. In the modest museum you can hear the shortened history of the Circassians, listen to folk tales, learn about their hospitality, the special character of the Circassian language, their assimilation into the Israeli Defense Forces, and more. There is also an exhibition of traditional costumes here and various items and house tools from the 19th and 20th centuries. Near the museum is the village’s mosque, which is reminiscent of a European church in its design- a testimony to the numerous cultural influences which the Circassians have experienced throughout their history.
A visit to the museum must be prearranged in advance: 04-6980349
