Next to Jaffa Road in the Lower City of Haifa are found well-kept green spaces which house the British Military Cemetery. Here are buried the soldiers of the British Empire who fell in the region during the First and Second World Wars. New Zealanders, Australians, Indians, South Africans and others are also buried here. For Britain of those days, this was an optimal solution, as burial at the place of falling is simpler than transferring the dead to their place of origin. At the British Military Cemetery stands a memorial and the burial sections are divided by the religion of those buried in them. At the same time, the hundreds of graves are similar to each other in size, notwithstanding differences in religion, gender or rank.
