Louis Marie de Caffarelli was an engineering officer who served in Napoleon’s army in his campaign in the Land of Israel in 1799. He planned artillery batteries and their positions for the French units and was considered to be a brilliant engineer. De Caffarelli, who lost his leg in one of the French Army battles in Europe, participated in the siege on Acre with the support of a crutch. Thus he received the nicknames of "Wooden led” and "Father of Crutches”. During the battles in Acre he was wounded in the arm and as a result he died a few weeks later at the age of 43. De Caffarelli was buried in Acre in the area in which are located today the Western Galilee College and the Manof Youth Village. A monument was put here by the French Government and each year in November a military memorial ceremony takes place here attended by the French Ambassador in Israel.
