As one of the cities that are sacred to Judaism, Tiberias flourished culturally. Among others lived in it Tannaim and Amoraim Jewish Rabbinic sages, the writers of the Mishnah and Gemara and quite a few Jewish saints. Naturally, many of them are also buried in it and one of them is Rabbi Hiyya of the Tannaim, who came into the Land of Israel from Babylon in the 3rd century CE and was the student of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi. Rabbi Hiyya is mostly known for his unique teaching methods, according to which the students themselves also teach each other. Next to Rabbi Hiyya are buried his sons, Hezekiah and Judah. As part of the renovation works that were done at the Tomb of Rabbi Hiyya it was covered with light shade marble and stairs were built to make access to it more convenient. Many of the people who come to the Tomb of Rabbi Hiyya ask for rain, especially at times of drought. One can access the Tomb of Rabbi Hiyya through Brenner Street.
